Veterans Day: Commemorating Those Who Serve

“Better than honor and glory,
and History’s iron pen,
Was the thought of duty done
and the love of his fellow-men.
~ Richard Watson Gilder ~

Veterans Day is observed on November 11th each year to honor the veterans who have served our country. Veterans Day was formerly celebrated as Armistice Day, to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in which a temporary truce was made between Germany and the Allied Nations during World War I. It was later named to reflect the honor due to veterans of all wars.

As I reflect on the sacrifices veterans and their families have made, I would like to share some of Fauquier County Public Library’s collection with you.

We have several books for current veterans and their families, including:
Here are some books and DVDs on the various wars in which our brave veterans fought for freedom:

Revolutionary War

Civil War

World War I

World War II

Korean War

Vietnam War

Persian Gulf War

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

Since 2012, the Fauquier County Public Library has asked patrons to submit photographs of veterans, to be scanned and displayed with information about the individual veterans. We have gathered a wonderful collection of veteran’s photographs. Please stop by any library branch to view the Veterans Day displays.
