October Consumer Reports: Saving Energy

The cover story for the October 2013 issue of Consumer Reports is "Bright ideas to save energy."  Some of the ideas are:  plugging air leaks, considering alternative energy sources, and upgrading your appliances.  Included is a section of lightbulb ratings, both general purpose and flood/reflector bulbs.

If you're in the market for a new car this year, check out the sneak preview of 2014 SUVs and small cars.  Another article notes that highway deaths were up in 2012.  It lists the major factors for this (speeding, not using seat belts, drunken driving, distracted driving), and what can be done to help make our roads safer.

"Four ways to weather the next big storm" has tips on how to protect your home and family both before and after a big storm.  It also includes ratings for generators and chain saws.

Other useful articles in this issue are:
  • Price comparisons for name brand vs. store brand items such as maple syrup, mayonnaise, and cranberry juice cocktail
  • Ratings for popped snacks, such as Popchips
  • Ratings for dishwasher detergents
  • Ratings for for food processors
