What's in a name?

“June” is a Latin word and the name of the sixth month of the year.  It was named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth.

Say "June" and most of us think of the start of summer, picnics and temperatures that begin to soar. However, June is also the name of many celebrities.  Here are a few of them.

Country music fans are probably familiar with June Carter Cash.  She first performed with her two sisters, Helen and Anita, as part of the Carter Sisters.  Later, she had several hit records with her husband, Johnny Cash, including “If I Were a Carpenter” and “Jackson.”  Another musical June is June Pointer, lead vocalist with the Pointer Sisters.

Are you a fan of 1960s television?  If so, you may remember several Junes.  There was June Lockhart, who played Timmy’s mom on Lassie.  She later played Dr. Maureen Robinson, the mother on the science fiction show Lost in Space.  Do you remember June Foray?  She was the voice of popular TV characters such as Rocket J. Squirrel (from the cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle) and the adorable Cindy Lou Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  And of course we can’t forget June Cleaver, the mother of Wally and Beaver on the sitcom Leave It to Beaver, played by Barbara Billingsley.

If you’re a fan of British television shows, you may recognize June Whitfield as Edina’s mother in Absolutely Fabulous, and from guest starring on Last of the Summer Wine.  How about June Brown, who played Dot Cotton in the BBC soap opera EastEnders?

Actress Eleanor Geisman took the stage name June Allyson, starring in numerous movies from the 1930s to the 1950s, such as Two Girls and a Sailor (1944), Little Women (1949), and The Glenn Miller Story (1954).  Another actress was June MacCloy, who starred in the film June Moon (1931) and the Marx Brothers film Go West (1940).  There was also June Haver, who starred in the 1940s films I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now? and Look for the Silver Lining.  She was the wife of actor Fred MacMurray, who played Steve Douglas, the father on the 1960s TV show My Three Sons.

Can you think of any other famous Junes?  If so, let us know!
