What's in a name?

daisies,floral,flowers,June,months,nature,plants,seasons,summer,text
“June” is a Latin word and the name of the sixth month of the year.  It was named after Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth.

Say "June" and most of us think of the start of summer, picnics and temperatures that begin to soar. However, June is also the name of many celebrities.  Here are a few of them.

Country music fans are probably familiar with June Carter Cash.  She first performed with her two sisters, Helen and Anita, as part of the Carter Sisters.  Later, she had several hit records with her husband, Johnny Cash, including “If I Were a Carpenter” and “Jackson.”  Another musical June is June Pointer, lead vocalist with the Pointer Sisters.

Are you a fan of 1960s television?  If so, you may remember several Junes.  There was June Lockhart, who played Timmy’s mom on Lassie.  She later played Dr. Maureen Robinson, the mother on the science fiction show Lost in Space.  Do you remember June Foray?  She was the voice of popular TV characters such as Rocket J. Squirrel (from the cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle) and the adorable Cindy Lou Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  And of course we can’t forget June Cleaver, the mother of Wally and Beaver on the sitcom Leave It to Beaver, played by Barbara Billingsley.

If you’re a fan of British television shows, you may recognize June Whitfield as Edina’s mother in Absolutely Fabulous, and from guest starring on Last of the Summer Wine.  How about June Brown, who played Dot Cotton in the BBC soap opera EastEnders?

Actress Eleanor Geisman took the stage name June Allyson, starring in numerous movies from the 1930s to the 1950s, such as Two Girls and a Sailor (1944), Little Women (1949), and The Glenn Miller Story (1954).  Another actress was June MacCloy, who starred in the film June Moon (1931) and the Marx Brothers film Go West (1940).  There was also June Haver, who starred in the 1940s films I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now? and Look for the Silver Lining.  She was the wife of actor Fred MacMurray, who played Steve Douglas, the father on the 1960s TV show My Three Sons.

Can you think of any other famous Junes?  If so, let us know!

What's For Dinner?

If your family is like mine, then dinner is something that you try and cram in between school, homework and rushing off to one of the many activities your children participate in.  As much as I would love to sit down to a 3 course meal every night in which my kids enjoy whatever I have decided to experiment with that day, it just doesn’t happen.  Instead I find myself trying to make something quick and easy without falling into the “Taco Tuesday” rut.
In an effort to find new and easy recipes, I have been collecting them from the many cookbooks we have in the library's collection.  I’ve found that almost anything I’ve made out of Slow Cooker Revolution by America’s Test Kitchen is a winner but the baked ziti with pepperoni, mushrooms and ricotta is the favorite.  The easiest recipe I’ve found so far is the Buttery Chicken “Scampi” Pasta - yes we are BIG pasta fans in my house - out of The Deen Bros.Take it Easy by Jamie and Bobby Deen.  On the off chance when you do have more than 30 minutes to prepare a meal or throw things in the crock pot, you have to check out The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food From My Frontier by Ree Drummond.  The meatballs out of her Rigatoni with Meatballs recipe are perfect with any kind of pasta or even just on a nice crunchy loaf of Italian bread.

So to all of you out there that are trying to balance everything and avoid the dinner rut, know that help is just a few cookbooks away!
