Let's Go to the Fair!

Are you having a hard time deciding on a vacation destination this year? Why not visit a state or county fair?

If you want to stay local, many of the surrounding counties have annual fairs planned for the summer. You will find fun food, great entertainment and everyone’s favorite, farm animals.

Check out the VA state website to find one near or far.  Of course, you'll definitely want to keep our own Fauquier County Fair in the queue for a visit. Scheduled for July 19-22, there's a great line-up of entertainment, events and competitions.

Get your kids excited about their visit by helping them create an entry with simple baked goods, art work, or home-grown vegetables. Your kids will treasure a ribbon won at the fair. The library has lots of books about fairs to help ramp up the excitement for your stay-cation fair visit.

My personal favorite is the Shenandoah County Fair in Woodstock, Virginia. Here you can still see the 4-H kids sleeping with and caring for their animals. These kids are always willing to tell you a story and, while the grandstands may be a bit worn, the entertainment is always great. And they always have all the junk food you look for at a state fair: ice cream, cotton candy, funnel cake, hot dogs and more.

You could spend days at a state fair enjoying food, fun, exhibits and entertainment. Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland all have spectacular fairs August to October. The State Fair of Virginia is held in late September in beautiful in Caroline County. The farm, converted into a perfect fair venue, was once home of the Triple Crown winner, Secretariat. There are many free concerts, the biggest pumpkins you have ever seen, and cows, sheep, tractors and fun for everyone. Plan your trip with info found under events of your favorite state.

Enjoy your visit to the fair.
