Indoor Air Quality

Are you concerned about airborn contaminants in your home?  The June issue of Consumer Reports lists several of the major home contaminants--household cleaners, interior mold, air fresheners--and what you can do to minimize the effects of each.  The issue also includes ratings on air purifiers and dehumidifiers for home use.

Worried about identity theft?  According to the Consumer Reports National Research Center, almost 16 million households were the victims of identity theft last year.  The June issue has a long article on Facebook and privacy, as well as ratings for computer security software.

Planning to paint your house this summer?  Check out the ratings for exterior paints and house & deck stains.  Also check out the ratings for gas grills, rated by small, medium, or large cooking area.  To protect yourself from the sun's rays while grilling, you might want to note the ratings for sunscreens.

Other articles in the June issue include ratings for pickles (Whole Foods's 365 Everyday Value Organic Kosher Dill was the winner), fast-food egg sandwiches (the winner here was Subway's Egg White and Cheese on Mornin' Flatbread), and cookware.

Each branch of the Fauquier County Public Library has the print issues of Consumer Reports from 2009 up to the current issue.  The Find It Virginia databases have an index to the issues from February 1, 1976 to the current issue, and the full-text of the reviews from January 1, 1999 to June 1, 2009.  You can access Find It Virginia from any library computer, or from home with your valid Fauquier County Public Library card.
